Factual History

In 2008 the present business, it’s architect and attorney vehemently opposed potential HDLC nomination of this site and disputed it’s historic architectural significance.  The former PJ McMahon Funeral Home was eventually nominated in 2008 and is currently under review by the Historic Landmark District Commission for Landmark Designation.

When we began our research in 2007 there was little or nothing about the history of the former funeral home anywhere on the internet aside from obits.  We launched http://pjmcmahon.wordpress.com/ in 2008 so that resources for researchers and history buffs would be available on the internet.  Many hands and countless hours of research went into compiling this history. In April 2009, this remains the first and only site that provides Sources and references so that you can check out the facts, drawings, photographs and resources that we have listed and more easily navigate, city archives, census records, special library collections, architectural plans, and public records which are readily available. Our goal is simply to document and preserve factual history and compile resources about the former funeral home located at 4800 Canal Street that so many are familiar with.   We hope you enjoy the history of PJ Mc Mahon Funeral Home and it’s relationship to New Orleans, Mid-City‘s historic Cemetery District neighborhood and surrounding cemeteries.
